IJMA3 Internet Point of Presence (PiPoP)

PiPOP is a program providing computers and internet access to 73 community centers across Lebanon.  Each center provides 4-30 computers with this access available free to anyone.  Centers were created in two rounds, with the most recent producing 30 new centers vested with the municipalities. PiPOP was initiated by IJMA3 to address the "digital divide" in the Lebanese society.  For this purpose, IJMA3 collaborated with civil society, public and international organizations to provide access to internet and technology in the 73 PiPOP centers. This project introduced the world of information technology to communities that did not previously have access to these resources. As short term objectives, PIPOP created several hubs in every region to be at the disposal of nonprofit organizations (social clubs, municipalities, schools and others), providing access to technology at a very competitive price to the maximum number of people of all ages and providing the communities with a small training center.  Schools without computer laboratories organized classes for their students at these centers which offered them access to new technology. Its medium- to long-term objectives were to develop local economic initiatives through information dissemination. Furthermore, PIPOP created new jobs and allowed individuals to uncover new potential, in addition to bridging the gap between urban and rural areas.
